And the wall came tumbling down

The Wall Came Tumbling Down

It divided a city!

It divided East and West Europe!

It divided the world!

And its fall on 9 November 1989 was a defining moment in post-war history.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Twenty years ago, on that historic night in 1989 the world watched as one of the great symbols of the Cold War era changed overnight from being a symbol of terror and division to a symbol of freedom and reconciliation.

Within two years the Soviet era would be over and a new era would begin.

And it was a new era not just for the world, but for Bible mission.

Because for the first time in more than seventy years Bible Society was once again able to work in the more than 25 countries that made up the former Soviet Union and its satellite states.

Bible Society quickly sought to bring the reconciliation, the peace and the love of Jesus Christ through Bibles, into the vacuum left by the demise of communism and the atheism it espoused.

But it was (and still is) a mammoth task encompassing many different nationalities, ethnicities, languages and time zones.

In some places, small villages have clung to the remnants of Christianity for more than seventy years. In other places most people have no knowledge of Jesus and the Gospel.

As well, moral decay has often set in with apathy, drug and alcohol addiction, and crime all too common.

This year Bible Society has projects totaling 4.7 million dollars in 23 of these former communist countries.

In faith, we have pledged $200,000 towards bringing Bibles to the needy people in these countries.

As you look back this 9 November and remember, ‘where was I when the Berlin Wall fell?’, will you prayerfully please consider giving a gift to bring Bibles to Bibeless people in countries that once were behind the Iron Curtain?

Or give online now.

Thank you and God bless you!
