Bibles for Haiti
In Haiti the streets are in chaos and the suffering is immeasurable. The Executive Director of the Bible Society of Haiti, Magda Victor, survived the earthquake but is sleeping outside her house because it is not safe. She writes:
“The country is a disaster. Throughout town, the streets are packed and many are praying. The air is unhealthy; there is the smell of dead bodies. People are taking refuge in the churches that are still standing. They are asking for God’s help. The need for Bibles is urgent.
The United Bible Societies, of which New Zealand is an integral member, is responding to the devastation in Haiti with a three part plan.
(I) Food and Water. To meet the immediate needs of the people Bible Society is working with partners on the ground to provide food and water.
(II) Scripture Distribution. Scripture leaflets such as God is our Shelter and Strength and Hope and Compassion will be distributed to help to bring hope and comfort. Bibles in Creole and French will also be distributed to replace Bibles that have been lost in the earthquake.
(III) Repairs to Bible House. Bible House is situated in Canapé Vert, an area badly damaged by the earthquake. Miraculously the building survived the earthquake but the roof was cracked. After the full damage has been assessed the roof will be repaired.
