In the midst of catastrophe.....
That's the time when the Bible and the comfort, hope and assurance its message brings, is most needed.
Food, shelter, clothing, medicine...they're the first priority. But once they're supplied and applied, the soul's need for sustenance starts to cry out and that cry gets louder and louder. That's when Bibles are most urgently and desperately needed....

In Mozambique, Bible Society has asked for our help to provide Bibles for 9,000 families, many of whom are Christians, in the wake of recent flooding which has seen 100,000 people displaced, 22,000 homes destroyed and 33,000 hectares of crops ruined. There is an urgent need to replace Bibles lost in the floods and for the hope and assurance they bring.

In Cameroon, Bible Society is responding to the needs of refugees from neighbouring Chad, who have fled in the wake of recent violence by Sudanese rebels in the capital N'Djamena, by supplying a 'holistic package' comprising a Bible, Bible comics, rice, oil and soap.

In India, Bible Society is working to replace Bibles following the persecution of Christians by extremists of other faiths in Orissa which has seen seventy churches, five convents and 1,500 houses burnt to the ground. Over 100,000 Christians have been displaced and many are in hiding.

By making a gift to these emergency Bible needs you will be helping to bring comfort and hope where it is most needed.

There are now over 100 million Christians in China creating an urgent and growing need for Bibles. With 700 million Chinese living on less than $3 a day, your gift will make a Bible affordable to such people. For every $2 of your gift you will enable a Chinese Christian to have a Bible for half the amount they would usually pay.

With the opening of the new Amity Press in Nanjing, China, the capacity is more than double that of the old press with the ability to now print more than 12 million Bibles a year. Amity printed Bibles are freely and openly available in China and possession of an Amity printed Bible in China is legal.

God has given us this unique oportunity to help support the mission to bring the Bible to the people of China. Please prayerfully consider partnering with us in this modern-day miracle of making Bibles available in Chinese for the Chinese people by making a gift today.

Pictured is Armelle Mekui, the newly appointed coordinator of the HIV/AIDS project in Gabon, with two of her helpers.

The programme is being received by governments, churches and Christian agencies in Africa with a degree of enthusiasm far beyond the original expectations of the project initiators. There is a great deal of interest in African countries to expand the programme and, at this time, a further ten Bible Societies are waiting to implement the programme. The only limitation is the lack of funding!

So many children today grow up in ignorance of the basics of the Christian faith. Yet, when they do hear about it through specially designed Children’s Bibles, they really get excited in a way few adults ever do! Bible Society has a special mission in bringing Bibles to children worldwide. We have over 550 projects to bring God’s message to tomorrow’s citizens – but nearly all these projects need our help. Will you help them, please?

In the first fortnight the country of Nepal is featured in the Prayer Booklet. There is an urgent need for Bibles in Nepal. The Bible Society in Nepal has only recently been registered by the government after eleven years of failed applications. So the doors are open! We need to help them as much as we can – now! Will you please help with you gift and your prayers?

The most important people at Christmas are family. So last year our Christmas appeal focused on 'Family' – Bible needs in New Zealand and in the South Pacific, our next-door neighbours. Bibles and Scripture material for people who need them – prisoners, the elderly, hospital patients, children in schools… and in the South Pacific. This appeal is to provide Bibles for Christians who cannot afford them and for those still searching for faith. Can you please give a gift this Christmas for our friends and neighbours here and in the South Pacific?
