Bible Big Night Out

May 13, 2010

St Johns’ Presbyterian Church in Papatoetoe hosted the Bible Big Night Out on Saturday 17 April.

Organised by the Auckland Regional Committee of Bible Society the event started with coffee and dessert (very yummy!) a time of fellowship, and an introduction to the E100 Bible Reading Challenge (which kicked off nationwide the following day), followed by a mini Bible seminar.

Each member of the Regional Committee presented a talk on the importance, history, inspiration and transformative nature of the Bible. Stephen Greenfield described the “big picture”, from creation to revelation, and the overarching theme of the Bible and God’s plan for us.

Brian Smith then gave a memorable demonstration of how different shaped containers can hold the same liquid contents, in describing how different translations of the Bible speak to people in different ways but always conveying God’s Word. This was followed by a ‘fast track quiz’ based on the E100 Bible readings.

Michael Mardon, Bible Society’s Auckland Regional Representative spoke on the topic: “Is the Bible for real?” An informative, visually captivating powerpoint sped viewers though time and gave an overview of how we got the Bible. It also provided scientific evidence to support the authenticity of the Bible.
In closing, Rodney Cameron highlighted the transformative nature of the Bible in his talk “The Bible and me”.

A great evening was had by all with several people commenting that it reinvigorated their interest in the Bible and that they’d made a commitment to take the E100 Bible Reading Challenge.
