Foreign-Language Bibles in Timaru Libraries
Jul 20, 2010
Members of the Timaru Bible Society Action Group presented Bibles in Maori, Samoan, Korean and Chinese languages to the Timaru District Library on June 10 2010. Alison Linscott and Margaret Hughes represented the Action Group in presenting the Bibles to District Librarian Nigel Brown.
And on Thursday 1 July, Margaret Hughes presented Bibles in Pidgin, Maori, Samoan, Korean and Chinese to the Aoraki Polytechnic Library.
The Timaru Action Group donated the Bibles so that members of Timaru’s multi-cultural community and overseas students at the Polytechnic would be able to read the Bible in their own language. The gift was the result of an idea that took many months to realise. The Action Group raised the money to purchase the Bibles by selling Christmas cards and by holding coffee & dessert evenings and a sponsored walkathon.
The staff at Aoraki Polytechnic have realised the importance of providing pastoral care for their overseas students and were very grateful to receive the Bibles, as was Pukari Gerald, a student from Papua New Guinea.
