Currently, the Bible Society of Liberia is implementing its End2End programme to support new believers in rural regions, which comprises of four strands: Faith Comes by Hearing (FCBH) listening groups, literacy classes, Scripture distribution, and assisting new believers to connect with local churches.

The initiative fits well in this context, where 85 per cent of Liberia’s 5.5 million population identify as Christian. But many challenges persist, such as an estimated 50 per cent living below the poverty line and literacy rates being low.

An important strand of the work is literacy classes. One who has benefitted from the literacy classes is mother and grandmother, Rebecca. “I am old, but the literacy programme at my church has helped me to read and write in my own language. I now read Scripture lessons in my church and teach my children and grandchildren at home. My literacy abilities have even led to my selection as a reviewer for the Maan Bible translation team. What a promotion!” says Rebecca.
