Welcome to Bible Month 2021

We’re excited to have you join us in celebrating Bible Month this year, as we continue to raise up what is at the heart of Christian life and service – the Bible!

Our latest Bible engagement research suggests that less than 1 in 4 Kiwi Christians engage with the Bible every day.

More troubling is that 56% of Christians in NZ either rarely engage with the Bible or don’t engage with it at all.

To help you increase Bible engagement within your church, below you will find a range of free resources and a new initiative designed to encourage your people to read the Bible every day throughout July.

Read for Bibles

Did you know that there are still over 1 Billion people who are unable to access the word of God because the Bible isn’t available in their heart language?

That’s why this Bible Month we are inviting your congregation to join our Read for Bibles fundraiser.

Read for Bibles is an online peer to peer fundraising initiative that encourages New Zealand Christians like those in your church to engage with the Word of God throughout July, while also helping to raise funds to support the Bible translation work which will help bring Bibles to those who don’t have them in their heart language yet.

To get involved, all they need to do is set up their own unique Read for Bibles fundraising page on JustGiving, by visiting WWW.READFORBIBLES.NZ

Feel free to share the video below with your congregation to get them excited about this fundraiser.

175th anniversary promo

As you may be aware, this year we are celebrating 175 years of Bible Mission work in New Zealand.

Since April our celebration roadshow has been making its way around the county as we continue our commitment to hold up the place of the Bible in our country.

We now only have the Palmerston North, Wellington and Auckland regions to go!

If your church is based in these regions, then feel free to show your congregation the video so that they can get a sneak peek of what they’ll experience if they attend one of these anniversary events.

The early story of God in NZ

Many know the story of Christmas Day, 1814, when Rev Samuel Marsden stepped ashore at Oihi and shared the Gospel message with an estimated 300 Māori. But, in this powerful video, Te Hurihanga Rihari, a direct descendant of Māori that invited Marsden to Aotearoa, shares the little-known story that this wasn’t the first time Ngāti Torehina had encountered God. Some 500 years prior to the arrival of the Bible, his people lived at Rangihioua under the blessing of God.

The early story of the Bible in New Zealand

Ngā Tīmatanga – Beginnings. This is the story of how the Bible arrived in New Zealand and how it spread quickly amongst Māori throughout the country.

As the video below documents, it’s a story that began on Christmas Day in 1814, when Rev. Samuel Marsden accepted an invitation from Māori Chief Ruatara to lead the first ever church service in New Zealand. With over 300 local Maori in attendance, Marsden preached from the Gospel of Luke chapter 2 verse 10, “Behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy.” And so the Bible began its journey in New Zealand. Share the video below with your congregation to help them be part of that journey in the 21st century.

People of Bible Society NZ

There is a Māori proverb that says:

“He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”
“What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.”

That sums up what is at the heart of our mission organisation – it’s our generous supports who enable us to continue to help make the Bible accessible to everyone and encourage interaction with it.

In the video below, you will discover the lengths our supporters have gone to help bring Bibles to people in New Zealand and around the world. We trust that their stories will help inspire your congregation to engage with the Word of God this Bible Month.
