He Tīmatanga
Our goal at Bible Society New Zealand is to support the translation of the entire Paipera Tapu (Holy Bible) into contemporary Māori for a new generation of te reo Māori speakers.
The Bible was first translated into Māori in the 1800s. The current, revised version of Te Paipera Tapu was published in 1952 before it was reformatted in 2012. However, the Māori language has changed considerably since the Māori Bible was first translated, and many believe it is now time for a new translation.
To help facilitate this process, a translation steering committee was formed in 2009. Since then, its members have produced a number of draft translations, including:
- the Gospel of Luke in Te Rongopai a Ruka
- portions of Scripture in Pukapuka Karaipiture Tuatahi

Now we have made available the latest collection of Māori translations – He Tīmatanga.
Ētahi wāhanga o te Paipera Tapu, He Whakamāoritanga hōu
In conjunction with the translation committee, in 2023 we have released our latest Māori translation publication called He Tīmatanga, which presents new translations of the following Scripture portions in te reo Māori:
