Help Transform Lives Through
BIBLE-BASED LITERACY
THE CAUSE
Over the past 45 years, global literacy rates have significantly improved, rising from 68% in 1979 to 86% today. Yet, 765 million (UNESCO) adults still can’t read or write—and two-thirds of them are women. On top of that, 250 million children are struggling with basic literacy. The impact of illiteracy reaches far beyond an individual’s inability to read or write—it limits access to opportunities, freedom, and dignity.
As a member of the United Bible Societies, we are committed to addressing this challenge through Bible-based literacy projects in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
By supporting these initiatives, you can help open doors to education and opportunity and enable people to engage with Scripture in life-changing ways!
THE IMPACT
Here’s how your gift will make a difference!
- In Pakistan, the Bible Society’s “Beacon in the Darkness of Illiteracy Programme” is helping Christian women learn to read, write, and understand the Bible.
- In Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Bible Society is empowering illiterate children and youth to develop literacy skills, engage with Scripture, and contribute to their communities.
- In Indonesia, the Bible Society is continuing its literacy work on the Mentawai and Batu Islands, using Bible storybooks and primers to teach both children and adults.
Empowering Women Through Literacy In Pakistan
Marriam*, a literacy teacher from Christian Colony, Quetta, is on a mission to help Christian women learn to read. In a region where education is not valued, especially for women, literacy rates are nearly zero. Cultural barriers prevent women from attending classes, as family heads often refuse permission and women lack motivation.
However, with the support of a local Catholic priest, who went door to door with Marriam to encourage families, she now teaches 19 women. One of them is Martha, who has longed to read the Bible.
“I have lived in Christian Colony for 47 years. I have loved the Bible from my childhood but, unfortunately, I could not read. I am thankful to the Lord God for providing me with the opportunity to learn to read and write in my old age.” Martha shares.
Your gift today will help empower more women like Martha to break barriers and access God’s Word.
